HOLIDAYS Join Sunflour Bakehaus in celebrating Fat Tuesday with delicious paczki. These traditional Polish over-stuffed donuts are a Fat Tuesday fixture throughout Metro Detroit. Since we don’t have a frying machine, we get ours fresh from Farm Hills Donuts. Made by Farm Hills’ bakers in small batches these pazcki are soft, stuffed with filling and fried golden. We offer lemon, apple, custard, strawberry, blueberry and raspberry. Once we sell out, they’re gone, so call ahead to secure your favorites. Every Mardi Gras, we offer a party in a box for 10-12 people, complete with purple, green and gold beads, our amazing cinnamon coffee cake and a trinket under one piece for luck! The King Cake is a well-known part of traditional Mardi Gras celebrations. A delicious cinnamon coffee cake, it is topped with a fondant icing and sugar in the three colors of Mardi Gras - gold for power, green for faith and purple for justice. Also popular in Hispanic communities, the King Cake is known as Rosca de Reyes. King Cake celebrations have been around since the Middle Ages, beginning in January each year at the start of Epiphany and lasting through Mardi Gras, or Fat Tuesday, the day before Lent starts. The King Cake honors the story of the Three Wise Men bringing gifts to the Christ Child. For centuries, cultures have made a special cake and included a gift inside - a coin, a bean, a pea or the more modern plastic baby. At Sunflour Bakehaus – one of the few bakeries in the region to offer these beautiful and delicious coffee cakes - our King Cakes come with a gold, green or purple plastic baby or coin. Be the lucky one to get the piece with the trinket under it and it's said you'll have good fortune throughout the year. Hot Cross Buns Hot Cross Buns are traditional spiced rolls baked during the Christian fasting time of Lent. We bake ours, topped with a fondant icing cross, every Friday and Saturday from Ash Wednesday until Easter. Want them during the week? No problem. For most orders, we just need one day's notice. Sunflour Bakehaus is proud to offer these authentic rolls and not the gummy white bread and citron many try and pass off as a Hot Cross Bun. Made with unbleached flour, water, currants or candied fruit, sugar, vegetable shortening, milk powder, yeast, salt, allspice and nutmeg. Start your Easter morning with a coffee cake, a crumbcake or authentic Hot Cross Buns from Sunflour Bakehaus. Then for your Easter brunch or dinner we can fill your table with fresh breads and rolls. For dessert we have pastel decorated Easter egg-shaped cakes and our fabulous cheesecake with an array of toppings. We offer a selection of fresh fruit pies to round off your Easter celebration. We love to do your holiday baking! As always, we recommend ordering ahead to guarantee we’ll have all the baked goods you want for your holiday celebration. The holiday season is a special time at a neighborhood bakery. The season gives us at Sunflour Bakehaus plenty of opportunities to bring our customers unique European cookies that few local bakers make anymore. The zests of lemons and oranges must be grated by hand, nuts are toasted in small batches and cookies are hand rolled and formed, all taking incredible amounts of time. But take a taste and you’ll discover, as we have, that they are more than worth the effort. Along with our standard decorated sugar cookies, gingerbread guys and tea cookies, we also feature many unique varieties of hand-crafted cookies, including springerle (a German anise cookie), lebkuchen (a German spice cookie), traditional French macaroons (made with ground almonds, not coconut), kolache (a handmade flaky cookie filled with raspberry or apricot) and melt-in-your-mouth mint chocolate chip meringue cookies. Holiday cookies range in price from $.35 to $1.50 apiece. We carry some cookie trays in our store and are happy to custom-make cookie tins or cookie/pastry trays with 24 hours notice. Join us at our shop from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. the first Saturday in December for a Holiday Tasting!
More than 50 years ago, Farmington Bakery began providing local Swedes with authentic Swedish Limpa (rye bread with anise seed). At Sunflour Bakehaus we are proud to carry on this tradition and have also added Cardamon Coffee Cakes to our repertoire for our Scandinavian friends. We bake Limpa the first and third Saturdays of every month, and Cardamon Coffee Cakes the first Saturday of every month. During the months of November and December we bake both every Saturday, as well as the day before Easter, the day before Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve. Please call ahead to reserve your Limpa and Cardamon Coffee Cakes. During the holidays, on special order, we also bake fruited Limpa with a traditional mix of candied citron, cherries and raisins. We try to maintain an extra stash of Limpa in our freezer for your convenience. We are also happy to bake a batch of the bread for you on an off-schedule day with a minimum advanced order of 11 loaves. We offer discounted pricing on orders of 45 loaves or more.
We have been baking authentic Persian Bread for more than a decade. Called "barbary" by our Persian customers, our flatbread tastes just like the bread many remember eating in Iran. Our recipe is made with unbleached and unbromated flour, water, salt and yeast and then coated in white hulled sesame seeds before baking in a hot oven. While our Persian customers prefer their bread thin and dark, many other customers like it more lightly baked and thicker for sandwiches. Let us know if you would like us to bake your Persian Bread a certain way and we’ll do our best to accommodate your request. Many restaurants, delis and caterers throughout Metro Detroit use our Persian bread for sandwiches. To do this yourself, carefully cut the bread lengthwise with a serrated knife and fill it with your favorite sandwich fixings. In our home, we use this bread for butter and jam toast and for the best grilled cheese sandwiches ever! Sunflour Bakehaus offers our Persian Bread and our Foccacia flatbread at many fine grocery stores in Metro Detroit, including many of the Busch’s grocery stores, several Whole Foods and Nino Salvaggios. Call us to find out where the closest store to you is, or stop by the bakery to pick some up fresh out of the oven. We bake Persian Bread every Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday. For thinner or darker bread, please call us the day before. We always recommend calling in your bread order, especially if you would like more than a few loaves, as we only make what we think will sell in our store and our goal is to sell out. We give discounts for orders over 50 loaves.
Sunflour Bakehaus is proud to offer authentic German soft pretzels, hand shaped and dipped in a solution imported from Germany, that gives them that unique “pretzel” taste you just can’t find at the mall or the ballpark. Our baker Jeff spent five years as a teenager wandering around Frankfurt, Germany, eating pretzels almost everyday (no joke). His favorite variety was the Laugenstange, a long pretzel that could be eaten plain, sliced open to put meat and cheese inside as a sandwich or just dipped in mustard. Of course he recommends eating these with a beer in your other hand, but since they come out of the oven warm every Saturday morning around 10 a.m., you might want to buy an extra to have with your beer later in the day. |
